Snapchat Streak Restore: How to Get Your Lost Streak Back in 2026
Spybroski Team
You open Snapchat, scroll to your best friend's name, and the little fire is gone. 312 days. Poof. And yeah, that stings. The good news? A Snapchat streak restore can bring it back in most cases, as long as you move fast and know where to tap.
You're not the only one dealing with this, either. Google searches for "snapchat streak restore" in the US went from about 22,200 a month in August 2025 to 40,500 in August 2026. That's an 82% jump in a single year. So a lot of people are losing streaks, and plenty of them have no clue what to do next.

This guide walks you through how streaks end, how to restore one in the app, what it costs, how long the restore window stays open, and what to try when the Restore button never shows up. No fluff, no fake hacks.
First, how does a Snapchat streak end?
A streak starts when you and a friend send each other Snaps for a few days in a row. Then a fire icon shows up next to their name, along with a number. That number is how many days the streak has lasted.
Here's the thing most people get wrong. Snapchat's own help page says you need to send photo or video Snaps to keep a streak going. A text chat doesn't count. Posting to your Story doesn't count either, even if your friend watches it. And it has to go both ways. If you snap your friend every day but they never snap back, the streak still dies.
The clock runs on about 24 hours. When time is close to running out, an hourglass icon appears next to the chat. Snapchat doesn't publish the exact timing, but most guides put it around the 20 hour mark, which leaves you about four hours. Send a Snap. Any Snap. A blurry photo of your ceiling counts the same as a perfect selfie.
Group streaks follow their own rules. Snap added them in September 2025, and a group streak keeps going as long as most members send a Snap each day. So one quiet friend won't sink the whole chat. Three quiet friends might.
Streak icons, decoded
Snapchat uses a few small icons to show where a streak stands. Hootsuite's Snapchat emoji guide lists them like this:
- Fire: you've snapped each other for at least three days in a row.
- 100: shows up on day 100 in place of the fire. A nice little trophy.
- Hourglass: the streak is about to expire. Snap now.
One more twist. You can swap these icons for any emoji you like in settings (on iPhone it sits under Additional Services, then Manage, then Friend Emojis). So if a friend's streak looks different all of a sudden, check whether one of you changed the icon before you panic.

How to restore a Snapchat streak in the app
Snapchat built a restore option right into the chat screen, and for most people it takes about ten seconds. Here's how it works:
- Open Snapchat and swipe over to your Chat screen.
- Find the friend or group you lost the streak with.
- Look for a Restore button with a fire icon next to their name.
- Tap Restore and follow the prompts. If it's your free restore, you pay nothing. If not, you'll see the price for your country before you confirm.
- Send a Snap right after, so the streak keeps moving.
That's it. If the restore goes through, your streak and its day count come back.
Lost a bunch of streaks at once?
It happens. Maybe your phone died on a trip, or you took a weekend off the grid. On iPhone, Snapchat shows a Restore All option that brings back several expired streaks in one go. Android doesn't have that button yet, so you'll restore each chat on its own. Same result, more tapping.
Restoring a group streak
Group streaks get a longer grace period. According to Snap, you can restore a group streak within a week of when it ended. One on one streaks don't get a published window. More on that in a second. First, the question everyone asks.
How much does a Snapchat streak restore cost?
Restoring a streak is free. It also costs money. Both are true, so let me explain.
Every Snapchatter gets one free Streak Restore, and Snapchat confirms this on its support page. After you use it, each extra restore is an in app purchase. When Snap first tested the feature in March 2023, TechCrunch reported the price at 99 cents in the US. Snapchat now says the cost varies by country, and the app always shows the real price before you pay. So trust the screen in front of you, not a blog post from three years ago (this one included, if you're reading it in 2029).
Then there's Snapchat+. Subscribers get one free restore every month. The month starts on the day your subscription started, so if you joined on the 14th, your free restore resets on the 14th. Unused restores don't roll over. Skip a month and that freebie is gone.
To use the Snapchat+ restore, open My Account, tap your Snapchat+ membership card, tap Streak Restore, and pick the expired streak you want back.

Paid by mistake? Snapchat doesn't handle those refunds itself. You'll need to ask Apple through the App Store or Google through the Play Store, depending on your phone.
So is it worth paying? For a 9 day streak with someone you met at a party, probably not. For a 900 day streak with your sister, a dollar is an easy call. You know which streaks mean something to you.
How long do you have to restore a streak?
This is where things get fuzzy. Snapchat says streaks "can only be restored for a limited time after they expire" and doesn't name a number. For group streaks it's a week. For one on one streaks, the safest rule is simple: restore it the same day you notice.
The Restore button is your clock. If you can see it, you can still restore. If it's gone, the window has closed and the in app route is done.
Why not wait and think it over? Because nobody outside Snap knows the exact cutoff, and Snap can change it whenever it wants. Treat it like a parking meter. You don't know when the warden walks by, so you pay now.
No Restore button? Try the Snapchat streak restore form
If the button never showed up, or you paid and the streak didn't come back, Snapchat has a support form for this. It's the last official route.
- Go to Snapchat Support and open the article called "I lost my Streak. How do I restore it?"
- Follow the link to the support request form.
- Fill in the details it asks for. Have your username, your friend's username, and the rough date the streak ended ready.
- Explain what happened in a sentence or two. "My app crashed and my Snap never sent" works better than a paragraph of drama.
- Submit it and keep an eye on your email.
Keep your expectations real. Snapchat says its team reviews each request, and only recently expired streaks qualify. A streak that died three months ago won't come back, no matter how sweet your message is.
Watch out for streak restore scams
Quick but important side note. If you run into a site, app, or account promising to "restore any streak" or "get streaks back for free," be careful. Some of them ask for your Snapchat login. Don't hand it over. Snapchat restores streaks through the app and its own support form, nowhere else. Anyone asking for your password wants your account, not your streak.
Why did my streak disappear in the first place?
Sometimes you did everything right and the fire still went out. These are the usual suspects:
- You sent a chat message instead of a Snap. Texts don't count.
- You posted to your Story and assumed that was enough. It isn't.
- Your friend didn't snap back in time. A streak needs both sides.
- Travel threw off your routine. A flight across time zones can turn your usual 9 pm Snap into a 30 hour gap.
- The app glitched or your Snap got stuck on sending. That's what the support form is for.
- You can't see the count, but the streak is still alive. Snapchat says the streak number and icon don't show in some regions or app versions. Keep snapping and the streak keeps going.
That last one trips up a lot of people. A missing number doesn't always mean a dead streak.
What's the highest Snapchat streak ever?
If you're mourning a 300 day streak, this might sting a little. The longest streak on public record sits above 4,400 days, according to Dexerto's running list, last updated in September 2026. That's more than 12 years of daily Snaps between the same two friends. The top three on that list all sit above 4,000 days.
One caveat, though. Snapchat doesn't verify these records. The lists come from user submissions, so treat them as bragging rights, not official stats.
Fun fact while we're here: every Snap you send to keep a streak alive also nudges your Snap Score up. Curious where a friend's number stands? You can look it up with our Snapchat score checker, and if you want the math behind it, our guide on how Snapchat Score works breaks it down.
Simple habits that keep your streak alive
Let's be real. The best restore is the one you never need. A few small habits go a long way.
Pick a daily slot and tie your Snap to something you already do, like your morning coffee or the bus ride home. Habits stick better when they ride on top of old ones.
Set a phone reminder for the two or three streaks you care about most. It's boring, but boring works.
Watch for the hourglass. When it shows up, you have a few hours, not a few days.
Give your friend a heads up before you go offline. A quick "camping this weekend, no signal" message saves you both the panic, and you can plan to restore it together.
And save your free restore for a streak that matters. Burning it on a 5 day streak means paying later for the big one.
Are streaks even worth the stress?
A small detour, because it matters. Streaks are built to pull you back into the app every day. That's the whole point of the fire icon and the hourglass. The UK online safety charity Childnet points out that "there can be pressure to respond on a daily basis," and that streaks can affect a young person's self esteem if they feel others have stronger friendships.
And yet a long streak with a close friend can be a sweet thing. It's a tiny daily "hey, i'm still here." So keep the streaks that feel like that, and let the rest go without guilt. Losing a streak doesn't end a friendship. Ghosting someone in real life might.
The short version
If you skimmed straight to the bottom, here's what you need to know:
- Look for the Restore button next to the chat. If you see it, tap it right away.
- Your first restore is free. Snapchat+ adds one free restore a month. After that, you pay a small fee that depends on your country.
- Group streaks can be restored up to a week after they end. One on one streaks have a shorter, unpublished window.
- No button? Use Snapchat's support form, and ignore any site that asks for your password.
